[continuation of page 152: http://urcrowdsource.org/omeka/items/show/4891] might otherwise be a second drain-foundation.\r\nThe wall above this is by BURSIN [= Amar-Sin], as shewn by a\r\nbrick with his stamp in situ in the N side of the 2nd\r\nbuttress in the upper most course of his building.\r\nAbove this the wall changes, the face being either\r\nslightly set back or slightly projecting : no stamped\r\nbricks were detected in situ but against it + fallen\r\nfrom it were very many of KUDURMABUG, + there is\r\nno question that this part is his work. The lowest\r\nburnt brick [three dots = therefore] ought to be URENGUR [= Ur-Namma]. of the\r\ngreen brick nothing can be said.\r\nIn the 3rd buttress then was a possibility of a\r\nbuilding intermediate between BURSIN + the\r\ncrooked wall - a projecting single course of\r\nrather different looking masonry : but this\r\nmight be foundation or just bad work.

\r\nContemporary with the KUDURMABUG wall, judging\r\nfrom - depth o its founds, was a burnt brick wall\r\nwhich ran out at rt. angles [symbol representing the word angels] bet. - drain + - 2nd\r\nbuttress + joined there w a mud brick wall running\r\nSW wch was traced for some distance : the 1st wall\r\ndid not come right up to the buttressed wall but left\r\na passage between. The purpose o this is not clear.\r\n

The original building was of mud brick throughout\n+ its authorship is unknown. The finding of UrEngur [= Ur-Namma]\nbricks looks as if he had something to do w it, + the \nfact is [?known?] that the place was at least restored\nby Sin [?].\nThis original building was on a raised platform.\nThe first really big change was when Kurigalzu \nrebuilt the shrine proper + probably part of the\nsurrounding buildings : he built over the old walls\nwhich he tore down to the level of this new\nhigher platform : over them he laid baked brick\nas a foundation but above this footing he built\npartly at any rate in mud brick certainly the\nNE outer wall was so built.\n

Remaining bricks, top 2 layers were Nabonidus : below this was KudurMabug\nthe the bottom of the burnt brick 7 courses : in the\ntop layer of mud bricks were mud stamps\nof Bur Sin. It is possible that there were 3\nperiods of mud brick : the top 2 courses were\nof a different colour, rather red, than 5 courses\nof greyer brick then 2 of blacker brick\nnot quite aligned + obviously of earlier date\nbelow this hard brick earth, possibly but not\ncertainly green brick walling.
\nBelow, in mud brick, frs of the found deposit\nbox, ruined + only 1 course high, empty +\ntraces of verdigris in the soil.\n

In the E corner of the buttressed wall\ntablets (a) 3rd dynasty date gone (b) ditto,\n(c) of the 1st year of Gimil Sin [= Shu-Sîn] (2212 BC)\nwere found in the mud brickwork at a\ndepth of 1.00 below burnt brick founds\nA mud brick with a stamp of BURSIN [= Amar-Sîn]\nwas found near the top of the mud\nbrick.
\nOne tablet was found at the very bottom\nof the mud brick (1.10 below burnt brick)\nBelow this came green brick.\nThe mud bricks were not in courses but all\nbroken + mixed up : apparently someone had\ndug down here before. Pavement runs along outside of wall; of broken +\r\nodd cut early bricks, many with the double fingermark\r\nforming a pathway 1.60 wide from the wall face.\r\nThis is in connection with a wall of green bricks\r\nthe face of which can only be judged from the edge of the\r\npavement : this wall stands at present 080 high +\r\nis of reddish clay.\r\nOn this is built a wall of dark grey mud bricks\r\nrising to 1.50 above pavement level from the 2nd buttress\r\nto the broken N. end : it lines up with the green\r\nbrick wall, at least approximately + has no [?salients?]\r\nbut runs str. along this front line of this latter\r\nbuttress. The burnt brick + bitumen drain is cut down\r\ninto, or built into , the mud brick, + stepped down in \r\nfront to get better footing : there can be no doubt that \r\nit was part of a wall otherwise built in mud\r\nbrick, perhaps that of which we have the remains,\r\nperhaps of one now not traceable. Anyhow the burnt\r\nbrick walls are built up against it.\r\nIn the 2nd buttress from the N, the bottom course of\r\nburnt brick for part of its length may be older than\r\nthe upper part : at - N end of - buttress there are 3 bricks\r\nmuch thinner than those of - rest o - course (see photo [empty space])\r\nTo this may correspond the lower courses in the middle\r\nof the 3rd buttress which rest on dark grey mud brick + \r\nare differently aligned from + project beyond the rest of the\r\nbuttress, lie deeper + shew signs of a break in bond\r\n(see photo [blank space]) : this, though built without bitumen [continues on page 142: http://urcrowdsource.org/omeka/items/show/4880]\r\n

Opposite the W. corner of ENUNMAH a pit\nwas sunk against the S side of the big drain\n(here no longer Nebuchadnezzar) to a total depth of [blank space].
\nThe drain founds were at -050\nBelow these was hard close packed brick\nearth, reddish grey, containing but little pottery\nat -150 the soil was more reddish clay\ncertainly rammed down artificially, containing\nfrs. of mud brick + some pottery, nothing\n[?] : it was in this stratum that\na carnelian cylinder seal was found.\nAt circa -2.20 was grey sand containing\nmany small shells, this was tightly packed\nbut crumbled when disturbed. A rather simple flag paving ran over the\nwhole of this (except in R 2 NW; see plan)\nIt corresponds to a rebuilding of the cross\nwalls, in which, after the 3rd or 4th course from\nthe bottom, there is a very marked change. A\nbrick found low down against the W wall of\nR 2 is of Kurigalzu, + the upper part of\nthe walling, built of rather small greenish\nbricks, may well be his work. This rebuilding\nwas visible in all the crosswalls. Also, the\nNE wall originally had no buttresses: the\nbuttresses come in only with the 2nd period,\n+ actually start one course above the level\nof the flagged pavement. The blocking of the\ndoors is later still.\nThe plan of the place is clear : a long [?court?]\nbetween the two temples, forming an approach,\n+ at two points cut off by double cross walls\nwith gateways through them, the narrow\nspace between the crosswalls being possibly\nguardrooms, the [?] intervals open courts.\n

Here there was found the ruined\ndrainpipe-drain of late date (Photo [blank space]) +\nthe drain in the Kudurmabug flag paving\n(same photo) : below this pavement (060\ndown) were remains of a second, also\nwith a covered surface drain + this seems\nalways therefore to have been a drainage\ncentre, probably [?owing?] to the [?] of\na drain down what was always an open\nspace surrounded by buildings at a higher\nlevel.\n

It lay almost at [?] [?] with\nthe main wall face\nthus [drawing (plan of find spot)]\nThe layer of burnt wood\nbeams + plants,\nran right across the [?] space x-y [see drawing],\n003-015 above the floor level of beaten mud\nearth. In the 1st recess from the E, with the long\nbronze drain, was found a second shorter one\nsimilar in section 038 long, also frs of\na larger unbaked tablet.\nBeyond the recess, W of the 2nd projecting wall,\nagainst the corner of the buttress of the wall\nproper, was found a fr of a stone relief\nof a man milking a cow : limestone in\nvery bad condition : length of remaining relief\n040, ht 025 [U 304 = fragment of Ur-Namma stela]. It lay just on the level of the\nfounds of the topmost wall where this projects\nbeyond the wall face below : there is no visible\npaving at this level at this point\n

Here as in room 16 the stone frs lay in a \nsingle well defined stratum about 050-070\nbelow the top of the standing brick wall, + close\nto the wall itself the frs fewer than\nin the middle of the rooms. There was no floor\nlevel below them. In 16, the layer was on\nthe level of the footing of the SE wall, but\nagainst this SE wall tr were virtually no frs.\nThe stratum seems to date from a period of\nfilling-in of a platform : and as it comes\nabout along the top of the destroyed mud brick\nwall the platform in question was probably\nthat connects with the earliest brick wall.\nThe frs. therefore should date (as vases) from\nthe mud wall period + were thrown in in\nthe filling when the mud brick building was\nreplaced by Kudur Mabug's brick structure.\nIn the NE corner of 16, were found [?]\nfrs. of inscr. tablets at about the same level as\nthe stone frs. but rather lower down\n

With the broken stone vases were found a \nfew sea shells, quantities of large flint nodules,\na piece of a stone seat - pebble rubbing -\nstones, + lower grind stones (all broken) of\nsandstone conglomerate + loose-grained\ndolerite (?) : the last were all of the flat\ntype, roughly square or oval or simply unshaped.\n
Against the doorway was found in situ a basalt hinge socket of URENGUR [= Ur-Namma] (U. 423)\n

Door in NW wall.\nThe brick wall is standing 6 courses high.\nAgainst the W jamb is the hinge stone of\nURENGUR [= Ur-Namma] with the remains of the brick\npole-pit lining 5 courses high, the top of \nthe top brick left being about flush with\nthe top of the 4th course of wall bricks [three dots = therefore] it is\nimpossible to say whether it originally went\nhigher but presumably if there was a brick\nfloor it rested on the top of this, if as is\nmore probable there was a mud floor its level\ncan't be fixed accurately.\nAcross the doorway runs a line of brick\none course deep like a threshold (bricks\nc. 030 long but edge broken): this might well\nbe in connection with the hinge stone: the top\nof this threshold is flush with the top of the\n6th brick course of the wall : it can't therefore\nbe the original floor level.\nAgainst the E jamb is another hinge stone of\npoor limestone, its top 028 below the bottom\nof the burnt brick : this shd belong to the earliest brick period.\n

Part of the pole-hole casing\nremains coming up to the top of the 4th\ncourse of the wall bricks\nOver the doorway there are traces of a\nmud floor several times re-whitewashed [three dots = therefore]\nit comes about the top of the 6th course\nof the brick wall + does not run over the\ntop of the wall (which only stands 6 courses\nhigh) so it probably represents one of\nthe habitation periods of this room :\nanother floor level was discernible in the\nroom against the 3 1/2 course, but in the\ndoorway this can't be made out. The\nwhitewashed floor is only 003 below the\ndouble mud-brick step of Nebuchadnezzar.\nThe mud brick runs right under the doorway\nwithout a break\n

The hinge-stone found in position cannot belong\nto the mud brick wall which has been hacked away\nto make room for it: it has been sunk to\nsome depth below the floor level to which it\nbelongs, but this floor connects with the burnt\nbrick walls.\nThe floor was of mud + much destroyed: there seems\nto have been a brick threshold across the doorway\nThe pit in which the hinge stone was sunk was\npartly lined with burnt brick to keep it open for\nthe hinge pole : the mud floor ran over the top\nof this rough masonry. A brick with a hole\nthrough it served as a socket for the wooden\ndoorjamb, which was also propped with brick work\nThe mud brick threshold of the Nebuchodnessor\npavement ran over the whole thing, about\n050 above the mud floor (which comes\nagainst the 3rd-4th course in the burnt brick wall. All but the NE wall rest on mud brick.\nOf the SW wall there remains at most 4 courses\nof burnt brick (0333- x 008 x 0033), 7 on the SE, +1 on the NW. Below this are 6 or\n7 courses of mud brick (033 x 008) with a\nlittle rubbish between the 2 materials. At the\nNE angle the mud brick has been cut off to a\nflat end + a new burnt brick angle abuts on\nthis\nIn the NW wall of mud brick is embedded a burnt brick (which didn't come to the wall face)\n
Against the SW wall was a terracotta drain\nformed of cylinders diam. 040 ht: 027 with a raised collar but no socket : it went\ndown to below the founds of the\nburnt brick wall. By it were found a quantity\nof minute crystal pebble beads (mostly found\nin a broken jar) + a short string of larger\npaste + stone beads\n

The stone is older than the wall CC\nClearly too the brick work casing is older than\nthe wall CC, as it goes right under it.\nEE & FF are also anterior to CC. They look\nlike a pavement but are very roughly laid\n& not at rt angles to the wall lines. There is\nno brick pavement over the rest of the room\nbut at about their level there is a distinct\nstratum line in the filling of the room; below\nthis is fairly clean brick clay, above much more mixed soil & ps. of broken brick\nThe floor(?) & the hingestone [three dots = therefore] do not connect\nwith CC which is the oldest burnt-brick wall\nremaining here. As regards the mud brick\nwalls. No pavement connecting with these walls\nhas been found in any of the rooms 16– 27\n23, nor have these rooms got doors: the inference\ninference is that their floor level was higher\n& their founds went well below it, & that the \nfloor level was destroyed by the burnt-brick\nbuilders who laid their (mud) floors at the\nsame level (or even lower ?)\nBut this apparent burnt-brick pole-casing\nhardly suits the mudbrick construction of [continues on page 180]\n

The threshold + a\nbit of floor to the W of it [?] level up\nwith the broken floor level that runs\nover the other door stone (see drawing)\n+ in that case certainly do not belong to\nthe standing main wall, though this must\ncorrespond to the lines of the earlier.\nThe fact that the founds of the NE & SW\nwalls are at a higher level than the threshold\nmakes this more certain. But in the\nlowest course of the SE wall there is not\nthat use of bitumen mortar which one\nexpects with URENGUR [= Ur-Namma]\nSafe to say: the eastern (uninscribed)\nsocket is earlier than the URENGUR socket\n+ the masonry connected with it, + is later\nthan the mudbrick wall.\nThe URENGUR socket is probably earlier\nthan the existing brick walls. At the NW corner, TTB Aa Z\nwas a small hoard of unburnt tablets\nThese lay in fairly clean brick earth almost\n060 below present surface with a little\nbroken brick [?etc?] between the clean earth +\nthe wind borne dust of the top layer.\nWith them was a pot-base of fairly fine\nred clay thus. [drawing (artifact: pot)]\nWith the tablets was a fr. of an inscribed cone\nalso a bowl rim thus 1/1 [drawing (artifact: pot sherd profile]\n
