Lapis is a deep blue stone that is mottled with white calcite and brassy pyrite.  It has a mohs scale of 5-5.5 and has a dull luster.

All had fallen from their position and in all cases the face of the shell was so decayed that little of the design remains. Most of the design was figures, but there were also bits of purely decorative design. One part of each was sufficiently in situ to be waxed: the rest picked out in fragments.

The hair is confined by a plain heavy bandeau and falls in a square mass behind the back with a lock over each shoulder. The eyes are inlaid with shell and lapis, and the eyebrows with lapis. Very coarse ugly work.
