Description:

The Isin-Larsa period began with the collapse of the Ur III dynasty, and subsequent power vacuum.  This period is marked by the domination of the Amorite cities of Isin and Larsa and their fight for dominance. At the end of the Ur III period, Ishbi-Erra left Ur to found his dynasty at Isin, then subsequently recaptured Ur, Uruk, Lagash, and Larsa.  Subsequent rulers appointed a governor, Gungunum, to rule Larsa, and he revolted against Isin, and captured the city of Ur. During this period, the rulers were focused on repelling the Elamites from the areas around Ur, Uruk, and Nippur.  Large building projects, centralized power, and trade routes appear during this period. This period ends with unification under Hamurabi.
