Neo-Assyrian
Around 930 BC the Assyrians expanded their territories eventually forming an empire that reached as far as Egypt. This collapsed in 612 BC with the fall of the capital at Nineveh to the armies of the Babylonians and the Medes.
Description: The Neo-Assyrian Empire was an Iron Age Empire, located around Ashur. Following the reforms of Tiglath-Pileser III, Assyria expanded to the Mediteranean, Iran, Turkey, and Southern Iraq. Aramaic was made an official language of the empire alongside the Akkadian language. After the death of Ashurbanipal, a coalition of Medes, Scythians, Cimmerians, and Babylonians descended on Ashur and destroyed the capital. Several of the most ancient works of Mesopotamian literature are preserved as Neo-Assyrian copies. The cuneiform is the final stage in the evolution of the script, with the number of glyphs being reduced, and shapes standardized and simplified.
