Description: The Neo-Assyrian Empire was an Iron Age Empire, located around Ashur.  Following the reforms of Tiglath-Pileser III, Assyria expanded to the Mediteranean, Iran, Turkey, and Southern Iraq.  Aramaic was made an official language of the empire alongside the Akkadian language.  After the death of Ashurbanipal, a coalition of Medes, Scythians, Cimmerians, and Babylonians descended on Ashur and destroyed the capital.  Several of the most ancient works of Mesopotamian literature are preserved as Neo-Assyrian copies.  The cuneiform is the final stage in the evolution of the script, with the number of glyphs being reduced, and shapes standardized and simplified.
