A strainer is a vessel that is used for separating wanted elements from unwanted elements.  By using Anna Shepard's criteria, a strainer is a open form where the height is less than the diameter.  The angle of the sides from the base are between 30 and 60 degrees.  There are small holes in the vessel in order to help the separation.

This category matches Woolley's published ceramic typology no. 248, metal typology no. 97 and does not match any from his stone typology.
